It is difficult to believe that I would be the first to sing the praise of Ms. Featherstone's book on . This is a MUST READ for professionals going into the field of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the families who love them. As a sibling of a man with Down Syndrome I couldn't have written a better book myself. And as a Adult Sibling Selfhelp Support Group Facilitator I couldn't recommed a better book to my fellow siblings.
Although I have been aware of my daughter's disability for years, I found Ms. Featherstone's book to be a source of support and understanding which I couldn't find elsewhere. This book covers a wide range of disabilities from physical, to mental, to emotional handicaps and gives first-hand accounts from people who have various relationships with the disabled. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a niche in the world as a relative to a someone with a disability.
I happened to read this book from my friend's recommendation.
Because this book was quite old, at first, I didn't expect much. But as I read more, I found it's really a gem.
Myself as a mom of severely autistic child, the amount of heartfelt consolation I got from this book is just great.
The author, Helen Featherstone did unique and truly rare job - to describe all kinds of emotion the parents can experience from the first moment of
the shock till throughout the embracing process. The way of doing this is so composed and documentary- like, but also still so empathetic and humane that the readers like me couldn't help but shed tears coming from deep in my heart. Sometimes harsh reality,but other times just also another way of being. Thanks to this book, I realized more clearly the exact status of my life, which is neither only tragedy nor banal 'Notwithstanding' happy ending story.
As the sister of a low-functioning autistic and blind child (always a child no matter how old she grew), I first read this book a decade ago. Now, as I attempt to write my own memoir, I am reading it again and I am blown away. I have found comfort from identification with other family members while I shed bittersweet tears at remembering her and our family. Although this book was written in 1980, I believe that the struggles it describes are the same as those that "different" families experience today. Helen Featherstone deftly explores the isolation, anger, and grief that comes with living with a disabled child. The balance between objective discussion and personal stories is perfect. I was particularly warmed by the inclusion of siblings in her discussions. I can't recommend this book enough.
Read a few pages at a time. The honesty really needs to sit with you for a while. Especially if you are a service/care provider.
Even though the language is outdated, the experienced this talks about are real. Things have improved some since
this was written. This gives people insight into how it really feels to be the parent of a disabled child.
