I read this years ago and for some reason it popped up again. I enjoyed rereading it. The h is the older plainer sister of a great beauty. Her half-brother takes her out of a convent and plans to marry her or her sister off to his wicked magician. The brother has his own nefarious plans and needs to ingratiate himself with the magician. The h decides to sacrifice herself and spare her sister by marrying the terrifying guy. The H is way more than he seems and I loved him from the start. He is very self-serving and plans to get what he can out of the h's half-brother. He is oddly attracted to the h and not her more beautiful sister and he is satisfied with the agreement to marry the h. There is a secondary romance between the aforementioned sister and the married knight given the task of protecting her. It's a good story.

I almost didn't but this,but I am happy I did. It was almost perfect. The reasons it wasn't perfect are a matter of my personal preference, such as Simon being too nice. He needed to be a tough more wicked and a bit more assertive. I know, I'm nitpicking, but I would have so enjoyed a truly wicked hero.

Otherwise, it was wonderful.
This is a typical Anne Stuart dark hero book. Two sisters Alys and Claire are taken from a convent by their half-brother Richard to be used as political pawns in his scheme to overthrow the current King and crown himself as the next King of England. Alys is given in marriage to Simon our dark hero to solidify his power and influence with Richard. Although the book implies that Simon is this all powerful wizard in reality it is just a smoke screen to hide his true nature. Of course the only person that sees through him is Alys the less attractive sister but also the smartest. Alys was scared of everything including her own shadow but when it came to defending others she was as fierce as a Lion. There is a second romance between Claire and another knight named Sir Thomas that was sweet but very predictable. Although there were parts of this book that were enjoyable to read I also felt that it read like the book to nowhere. Pages were dedicated to the re-telling of why Simon was so dangerous and feared by all. There was only 1 scene that really showed how cold and calculating he could be when under attack. The author never sold me on the fact that 1. Simon was in partnership with Richard for personal profit and 2. that the H/h were truly in love with each other. Another problem was I never got the feeling that this story took place during the medieval period. The writing was good, some of the conversations between Alys and Simon really sparkled, there were several key elements that would have made this an excellent read but IMO the author spent to much time telling us how dangerous Simon was and not enough time showing us. Where was the romance between the H/h? The ending was abrupt; there should have been an epilogue. Out of the 2 couples I feel Claire and Thomas got their HEA as for Alys and Simon...maybe.

Simon of Navarre the hero in “Lord of Danger” is mysterious and dangerous. The inhabitants of the castle are sure he is master of Dark Arts and are avoiding him and his laboratory which suits him very well.
Simon and Alys are very well matched. Alys, at first glance is very adaptable and agreeable as fits a maiden brought up in a monastery. When they meet, they see each other differently than others see them. Simon finds Alys more beautiful and interesting than her notoriously gorgeous younger sister Claire. And Alys sees beyond Simon’s scary appearance to a very appealing man beneath.
The secondary characters of Claire and Thomas du Rhaymer are a nice background for the main characters. Claire is beautiful, spoiled and loyal. Thomas is a seasoned soldier, ethical and devoted to a fault.
At the end, love conquers all. Simon of Navarre who is a loner and wanderer comes back for Alys and Alys who is deathly afraid of horses will jump on a horse to ride into the sunset with this man who totally rocks her medieval world.
