Rating: 3.5 stars -- rounded upPlease see the summary for a general overview of the book. I had so many feelings and thoughts while reading this one that I wanted to get right into my commentary.
First, I'll be honest. I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series, although I did see the movie. So glad I had a least that background, because it would have been hard to read this book with no backstory. I'm sure fans of the series will jump right in, but I had little to go on and was frustrated at first.
As I read on, I did start to get into the story. However, I found Princess Mia whiny and a bit of a brat. I wanted her to come across more mature (according to the summary there was a five-year gap since her last escapades) and regal. Yet, her voice still came across as very teen to me and definitely not someone ready to rule anything. A secret later comes out that changed the character. From that point on, Princess Mia grew on me.
I did love the character who came into Mia's life as a result of this secret (you'll find no spoilers here), and I found Mia's fiance, Michael, charming. He actually saved Mia for me when I was annoyed with her. After all, if someone like Michael was crazy about her, there had to be something I was missing.
A character who gets under my skin initially is not always a bad thing, especially because I came around to like her by the end. I truly believe it's better to feel passionate about a book (good or bad) than blasé about it.
Toward the end, there's a twist that guarantees there will be another book in this series. I'm hoping this development will further mature Princess Mia.
If you are a fan of the series, you'll no doubt want this next chapter in Princess Mia's life. However, if you are new to the series, you might want to try a few of the earlier books first so you don't start this one cold like I did.
It's definitely a fun read for summer!

She’s back!
Mia is back, all grown up, and still my favorite princess. She’s going out with/engaged to her wonderful love Michael. But being a princess is hard. But planning a wedding with her grandmother’s watchful eye isn’t easy. Throw in the fact that her father is suffering from a major breakdown. And Mia’s got extra security due to a stalker. And there’s a big huge secret that is revealed…
Just another day for Mia!
Love love love. Reading Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries series is like coming home. This is the eleventh book in the series, and the first adult fiction book where Mia is grown up. (The other ones are categorized as YA)
There is so much to love about Mia and her crazy family. Her free spirited Mom and warm-hearted but obviously clueless father, her cold, hilarious and strong grandmother, her sweet boyfriend. And of course, Mia’s friends.
Mia’s adventure this time around was totally worth waiting for. I loved picturing Mia as an adult, trying o do good and help people while also fumbling along the way. She’s a hilarious person, real and flawed and makes bad decisions, good decisions and crazy decisions! It was extra fun for me because I loved all the adult jokes between Mia and Michael (playing firefighter?). I feel like I grew up with them so it’s awesome to see your friends again years later! (I do realize that they are fictional characters. I’m not that crazy)
The story moves fast with a lot of fun ups and downs and surprises. Mia’s voice is the same as I remember her to be and there’s some wonderful closure to some of the secondary storylines from the original series.
Bravo Meg Cabot. You’ve delighted me again.
If you loved the original Princess Diaries series or the films, don’t miss Royal Wedding!
I am a Meg Cabot fan – I’ve read her Princess Diaries series, her Heather Wells series, and her Queen of Babble series. She also has a YA vampire series, and though I haven’t read it – I know Kel has. It’s kind of a guilty pleasure, and so far I’ve enjoyed all of them! Royal Wedding is the latest in the Mia Thermoples, princess of Genovia series. Just released this summer, I was looking forward to reading it, and it’s the perfect beach read!!
Mia is clumsy, somewhat neurotic, not graceful (at all), and definitely not your average princess. Is there such a thing?? In the very first book of the series (which the movie was based on) Mia first finds out she is a princess, when she is 14. It’s quite a shock, and she’s still trying to adjust to royal life. Now she is older, and getting ready to marry her longtime boyfriend, Michael (who has been with the series almost since the beginning, as her BFF’s brother). Now she is known around the world as a princess, and with the world watching she is still stumbling!
The announcement of her engagement sets off a media frenzy, and the paparazzi that follow her every day all over the city only increases. Literally, a circus. Not unlike the one that probably follows the royal family of England everywhere they go. One secret about the royal family is revealed (possibly a spin-off, or another book in this series?). Her father, whom she had not known until she was a teenager. Spoiler alert he had another daughter, and it’s in this latest book that her identity is revealed.
That isn’t the only secret revealed in the book, and this second secret is a big one! This was a fun book – most of Cabot’s books are. You can enjoy this book even if you’ve haven’t been a Princess Mia fan from the beginning. Her grandmother’s interference in her wedding plans are hilarious – and so relatable to anyone who’s had someone “help” with their wedding plans. This just might be my favorite Mia book yet!
