Finally! I don't know how long this book has been sitting around on my kindle waiting to be read. Let's just say that it has been way too long. I can't even say it's because I thought that I wouldn't like it - I knew that I would. I could come up with some excuses as to why it took so long, but that part doesn't matter. What matters now is the fact that I have read it and I loved it. If I had any sort of complaint it would be that the ending didn't feel like complete closure. It is one of those that leaves some things to be interpreted by the reader, which means that it could be left alone and never touched again or Gates can write a second book and continue it. While I definitely wouldn't mind another Caleb/Christine adventure, I would have liked a more definite ending. That being sad, I still loved this book! I still would recommend everyone to go out and read this book. Now on to the good stuff.
The beginning was awesome as an introduction to the creepiness that would later become more prominent. It immediately grabbed my attention and made me wonder what was going on. There seems to be so much that is bubbling right under the surface waiting for its time to get out. I love knowing that something is wrong and not immediately knowing what it is. Christine is in what is essentially a refurbished insane asylum, but if she was lucid enough to send the letter then maybe she's not that crazy. I really liked the way that Caleb's character progressed throughout the book. I loved the fact that he is a high school graduate with the aspirations of nobleness- he wants to go to Africa and make a difference. How often do you really see that type of character in a high school student in a YA novel? Caleb is not just a good kid; he is a good kid with the dream of changing the world from the beginning.
He doesn't know that he is already destined to do great things and face an oppressive evil. How do you not help evil when you don't know what evil is asking you to do? Christine surprised me -she really was crazy, a little. But she was strong enough to overcome the loss of her twin sister, her witch of a mother and the fact that something was done to her brain. There was strength in her that I didn't expect to find. I liked that the heroes had their own pasts to overcome, and that they all stepped up even though they didn't think that they could. I can't forget about Bean, truly the trusted sidekick. I love his humor and know that he's cracking jokes even on the ethereal side. And yea, this is going to contradict my first opinion of the ending (sort of). The ending wasn't a happy ending; it was a well-deserved break for the heroes of the story. It didn't necessarily provide the closure that I wanted, but it provided hope for any future adventures. Because whatever they face next, they can say that they survived the end of the world - this time.

Recommendation: I think that if you have not had a chance to read this, you should put it on your TBR list. It is definitely worth reading.Go get a copy today!!

First thoughts

I was at first afraid to read this book at night after reading the summary and having just read a couple weeks ago "Ashes" but once I started it, turned out I was worrying over nothing, though when it near the end there were some parts that really creeped me out, it gave me that kind of vibe that makes you shiver...some of those last images I don't know if I'll ever totally forget...but I really liked it and I'm guessing there's going to be a sequel(?)

Summary

Caleb has everything he ever wanted, he's popular in school, he graduated top class, has the hottest girlfriend, a best friend named Beans who has his back and he's going to Africa to help with the people there and perhaps write an article that could get posted in the newspaper but everything changes when he gets a letter in the mail from his childhood best friend Cristine...the friend that he had sent her twin sister to dissapearance...and to make matters worse the letter from her is crying for his help so he drops his trip to Africa and convinces his best friend Beans to go with him, enticing him with good food and beach time...but when they get there and Caleb goes to his fathers house he's gone and from there everything goes from bad to worse.

Caleb and Beans embark themselves on a journey that will tear their lives apart and send them into oblivion. Once they start there's no going back no matter how hard they try. Caleb learns his fathers old secrets and the horrors that come with it, there will be no harder test for Caleb than the one he's about to face.

Last Thoughts

I enjoyed the read, not suited for a young audience, there are parts that are little confusing but where it lacks there it makes up in action. I would recommend this to those who enjoy pure action, a little understanding and whole bunch of kick butt!! I really do think there will be a second book and I will definately want to read it. I give this book 3 and half stars for its action packed theme and interesting characters.
Gates is a fantastic writer and storyteller. I was absolutely blown away by The Sleepwalkers. The story was fast-paced, interesting, and fresh. He writes about realistically flawed characters and somehow he makes you sympathetic to nearly all of them. Never a dull moment with this read. The suspense and anxiety built to a glorious climax. I highly recommend it.
J. Gabriel Gates should definitely write more, his visual style and his knack for psychological horror make for a great combination when it comes to writing horror books, and honestly, I'd put him right up there with the likes of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Debatable in terms of experience, of course, but hey, if he's this good now, imagine what chillingly terrifying books can come out of this guy's mind in the future?

Some of the ideas were a little too out-there but honestly I haven't read one horror book that didn't have at least one or more ridiculous and/or senseless plot points, so this was obviously no exception. It's not that some of the things in this book were screaming "over the top!" like some other books do - I'm glaring at you now, The Vanishing Game - but it's like there were so many things the author tried to include that some of them ended up not going far. Not that it mattered, really. If every horror book was as much of a blast as it was paging through this, I'd have read them all by now.
